We believe that the Bible calls the church to be a place where suffering people can receive care and comfort. Because of this conviction, we offer free biblical counseling to both those in our church and in our community.
God intends the church to be a place where hurting people can find hope and help. For this reason we provide free biblical counsel on a wide variety of issues from marriage and family struggles to anger and depression. If you are considering counseling for yourself or are looking for a resource for a friend or family member, we would love to serve you by offering help rooted firmly in the word of God. When we say that we provide biblical counseling, we do not mean that counseling is equivalent to a mini-sermon, but rather that our counseling is guided by the following foundational principles:
The Bible is Relevant
We believe the Bible to be much more than a book of facts. Rather it is crammed cover to cover with truths that are intended to make a difference. God gave us His Word so that it might touch every area of our lives. The reality is all of us at one time or another have asked questions like, “Can the Bible’s hope really speak to my depression?”, “Can the Bible’s peace really speak to my anxiety?”, “Can the Bible’s love change even my marriage?” At Calvary, we believe that the Bible speaks to all of life’s problems, but sometimes everyone needs the careful thought and prayerful wisdom of another who can help us make the connections that make a difference.
The Bible is Personal
We believe that the Bible speaks to every area of our lives, but it isn’t simply a recipe book for happiness. Ultimately, the Bible points us to a relationship with a person – Jesus Christ. The Bible was given to point us to Him as the one who is able to make all things new. We believe real and lasting change occurs when people know themselves and their problems within a living and vital relationship with Jesus Christ.
The Bible is Compassionate
The Bible is not a static book, for it calls followers of Jesus to action. Those who serve at Calvary Biblical Counseling are there because they desire to bring Christ-like compassion to those who are struggling with life’s difficulties. We care because Jesus cares, and we take our marching order from His Word. Our counselors have received formal training in counseling and theology and are eager to show the love of Christ to those in need of help.
If this is the kind of counsel you are seeking, and you are located in the Joliet area, we hope you will contact us to set up an appointment by calling (815) 727-3130 or email Kristi at kristi.lehmann@cbcjoliet.org.
Why Biblical Counseling?
We at Calvary believe that the Bible is true. We believe that the Bible is more than a book of facts, but it is a book of truths that are intended to make a difference. The Bible speaks to all of life’s problems and is sufficient to answer our soul’s needs. Ultimately, the Bible points us to a relationship with Jesus. We believe real and lasting change occurs when people submit to a living and vital relationship with Jesus Christ. We desire to see hearts transformed as God applies His Word to the problems of life. We see in 2 Peter 1:3 that in Christ, God truly has given His people “everything we need for life and godliness.” By God’s grace, through His Word, exploring the rich wisdom of Scripture and applying it to the problems of life, people find what is needed to glorify God and answer the pressing problems of life.
What kind of concerns do people that come for counseling have?
We see people with all different problems. In all cases we use the Bible, God’s sufficient Word, to address all of life’s problems. Some of the most common would be those struggling in their marriage, those dealing with past hurts, parents who need help with their children, and emotional issues like depression and anger.
How do I make an appointment and how long does counseling take?
Appointments are required. To make an appointment, either call (815)727-3130 or e-mail Kristi at kristi.lehmann@cbcjoliet.org. Each session is one hour in length. The length of counseling varies and is different for each couple/individual.
What can I expect from Calvary Biblical Counseling?
First, you can expect that everything will be held in strict confidence except where there is a biblical requirement to involve others. Second, you can expect us to care for you and treat you with respect. Third, you can expect to be encouraged in your successes and exhorted to think and behave in a way that pleases Jesus Christ.
What does Calvary Biblical Counseling expect from you?
We ask that you be honest. We ask that you do weekly homework assignments that will encourage lasting change. We also ask that you give us a little time; habits were not developed over night.
